Welcome to the Mishcon Sports Law Academy for the 2022/23 academic year.
If, as the hackneyed and trite phrase goes, data is more valuable than oil then perhaps, in modern times, sports data is more valuable than petrol. The increased use, exploitation and monetisation of data by sports teams, athletes and businesses has given rise to a number of controversial issues which will be explored by our panel of experts.
We will be joined by: Preeti Shetty (CEO – Upshot and Non Executive Director – Brentford Football Club), Liam Thorpe (Head of Legal – Red Bull Media House) James Newman (Director of Corporate Affairs – Socios), and Keegan Pierce (UK & Ireland international development – La Liga) who will consider: (i) the ownership of live match data and database rights in the context of the dispute between Sportradar and Betgenius; (ii) who owns or controls athlete data (including the implications of Project Red Card); (iii) the challenges to the commercialisation of sports data; and (iv) how new technologies are revolutionising the way in which sport operates.
