Hugo is one of the UK's leading commercial litigation and civil fraud practitioners, combining an active client-facing practice with firm-wide leadership as Chair of Mishcon de Reya's Dispute Resolution department and Strategy Lead for Disputes on the Firm's Management Board.
A long‑standing member of the Firm for more than twenty years, Hugo is consistently recognised as a leader in his field across the leading legal directories. Clients describe him as someone who has "every skill you would want: judgment and leadership," who can "distil complexity into actionable advice, often in high-stakes situations," and who "strikes the right balance between technical precision and strategic foresight".
Hugo specialises in high-value commercial litigation and civil fraud, asset recovery, corporate investigations - including industrial espionage, theft of trade secrets, crypto and cyber-crime. He acts for FTSE-listed companies, governments, private equity houses, global brands and ultra-high-net-worth individuals. His cases have spanned the UK Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, Commercial Court and Chancery Division, as well as arbitral tribunals and overseas jurisdictions.
Highlights include acting for Turkey's largest gold-mining company Turk Altin in a shareholder dispute, a European government's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a fraud investigation, a leading online dating company in industrial espionage proceedings, and successfully defending S&P Global Platts against Fortescue Metals Group. He was shortlisted for the Financial Times Innovative Lawyers: Innovative Practitioner award and, under his stewardship in 2024, the Dispute Resolution team won a clean sweep of the leading industry awards.
In his strategic role on the Management Board, Hugo leads the Firm's V2030 ambition to be a leading dispute resolution firm - an ambition already well-founded with the Firm featuring in The Lawyer's top 20 cases more than any other firm in both 2024 and 2025, holding Tier 1 rankings across seven practice areas, and as the first law firm globally to hold CREST and NCSC accreditation.
Mishcon fields one of the largest disputes teams in the UK - more than 350 lawyers across over 40 specialist services - with offices in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and the UAE, and active roles in networks such as the International Fraud Group. Hugo is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) who speaks French and Spanish.
