Two Mishcon de Reya Partners crowned in Citywealth Power Women Awards 2015

Two senior Partners at Mishcon de Reya were last week awarded gold in the Citywealth Power Women Awards, designed to champion women in the wealth sector and recognise individuals and companies who support care giving responsibilities, female leadership, and celebrate diversity. Mishcon's Head of Employment, Joanna Blackburn, was named Champion of the Year for Mentoring, whilst the Firm's Head of Immigration, Kamal Rahman, received the Woman of the Year award for Business Growth.

Joanna was recognised for her dedication to the cause of changing the way that law firms are managed, challenging the industry to think differently about how to utilise their top talent and what constitutes success. Joanna has been instrumental in the introduction of new roles at Mishcon de Reya, believing that a variety of career paths provides more flexible opportunities for progression, and broadens the spectrum for which people are valued and rewarded and ensures diversification of the leadership of the Firm.

Commenting on the award, Joanna said: "I am honoured to receive this award, and delighted that Citywealth has highlighted the value of this issue. More women enter the legal profession than men, but they do not progress to the top of the profession in sufficient numbers. We need to be doing more to retain and promote these women. Careers are long, and I strongly feel  that there is no need for anyone, particularly women, to give up because of a belief that their life demands or choices are at odds with the client and industry's demands."

Kamal Rahman's multi-million pound Immigration department has grown significantly in the past few years and City wealth judges identified that this substantial growth would not have been possible without the exceptional service and results that Kamal and the Immigration Group delivers for their clients.  Kamal's client base is largely comprised of international wealthy individuals and family offices whose lifestyles are often difficult to 'fit' into the constraints of the Immigration Rules. Consequently, her practice focuses on obtaining expedited and exceptional decisions on behalf of her very exceptional clients. In addition, Kamal's clients originate from diverse regions including Russia, China, the Middle East, Asia and west Africa, and her multinational team reflects this diversity providing linguistic and cultural familiarity with the client base they serve.

She said of the award: "On behalf of my Group and Mishcon de Reya I am honoured to receive this award. It recognises the hard work of my team, the international nature of the Firm's client base and its culture, which fosters an environment that thrives on diversity, respect for the individual and the expression of talent. The Firm's ethos is one that inspires and empowers individuals to fulfil their potential. My team and I are beneficiaries of this."
