The Mishcon Innovations Series: Paul Beastall

Posted on 1 July 2025

Paul Beastall is the CEO of HutanBio, a technology company on a mission to decouple long distance transportation from fossil fuels, with HBx, their zero carbon biofuel.

Long distance transport collectively consumes over 9 billion barrels of fossil fuels annually. With vehicles typically operating for 20-30 years and remaining in motion for up to 90% of their lifespan, the transition to net zero presents considerable challenges.

HutanBio's mission is to decarbonise these sectors, quickly, cost effectively and with minimal disruption. To achieve this goal, our solution is to harness the power of a 2-billion-year-old ancient organism. A new-to-science marine microalgae with unmatched productivity that outperforms legacy algal strains by an order of magnitude.

Using our proprietary cultivation platform we can grow fuel using CO2 and sunlight, in seawater on unproductive non-agricultural land to deliver a scalable, sustainable and cost effective zero carbon fuel that works with existing infrastructure to provide immediate carbon savings for the marine, aviation and heavy land transport sectors.

No fresh water | No competition with food crops | Just scalable, sustainable energy.

Paul Beastall has spent his entire career working at the interface of business and technology and is highly motivated by the potential of science and engineering to make a better world.

His key strength is bridging the gap between technology specialists and investors, commercial functions and regulators, driving the impact of technological innovations.

He is the former Strategy Director at Cambridge Consultants and holds a Masters in Systems Engineering from York University

Currently he's CEO at HutanBio and a non-executive director of the Medicines Discovery Catapult.
