20 years since Section 28: Its legacy for the LGBTQIA+ community

DateTimeUKOnline

18 November 2023 marks 20 years since Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 was repealed. Section 28 prohibited local authorities from intentionally promoting homosexuality or from promoting the teaching in schools of the acceptability of homosexuality in family relationships. The effects of Section 28 were felt widely across the LGBTQIA+ community, and are still felt to this day.

To mark the anniversary Mishcon Pride Co-Chair Hannah Myers will be hosting a talk with Dr S Chelvan, Barrister at 33 Bedford Row, discussing the history and lasting impact of Section 28.

Dr Chelvan specialises in Immigration and Public Law and is recognised as a leading expert in LGBTQIA+ asylum claims in the UK.
