Lord Mishcon 1915-2006

1915

In Helix Road, Brixton, a son, Victor, is born to Arnold Mishcon, a rabbi, and Queenie Mishcon, a school teacher.

1928

Joins City of London.

1932

As a schoolboy becomes a member of the local League of Nations Union Branch Committee.

1933

Decides against university and commences articles as soon as he leaves school.

1934

Joins the Labour Party.

1936

Becomes a qualified solicitor and immediately starts his own practice, Victor Mishcon & Co, a one man office in Brixton, London.

1945

Elected member of Lambeth Council, Angel Ward.

1946

Elected member of the London County Council for Brixton.

1947

Appointed Chairman of the London County Council's Finance Committee (the youngest ever chairman of a LCC committee).

1954

April 13: Elected Chairman of the London County Council, at 38 its youngest chairman of the century.

Appointed member of Wolfenden Committee on Homosexual Offences and Prostitution; awarded Star of Ethiopia.

1957

However, among his many contributions to public policy was his membership of the historic Wolfenden Committee, which led to the decriminalisation of homosexuality.

1958

Elected Chairman of the London County Council's Fire Brigade Committee.

1964

Appointed as Lambeth's member of the Greater London Council.

1965

Appointed member of the National Theatre Board.

1967

Appointed vice-president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

1976

Appointed Vice-Chairman of Council of Christians and Jews.

1978

Created life peer, Baron Mishcon of Lambeth.

8.28pm, April 18: Makes debut speech in House of Lords on the UK penal system

1981

Appointed a member of the House of Lords Select Committee on Procedure.

1983-1990

Acts as Labour spokesman on Home Affairs in the House of Lords.

1991

The inaugural Mishcon Lecture on political and legal affairs is given at University College, London.

1992

Appointed Honorary Queen's Counsel.

1993

Appointed to the House of Lords Select Committee on Medical Ethics; receives an honorary law degree from University of Birmingham.

Engaged by Princess Diana as her solicitor; receives an Honorary Fellowship from the Faculty of Law, University of London.

1994

October:  At the signing of the Israel/Jordan Peace Treaty his role in the Middle East peace negotiations and his secret shuttle diplomacy between the two countries is revealed.

1995

Celebrates his 80th birthday.

2002

Opens the Firm's new offices at Summit House, Red Lion Square.

2005

Celebrates his 90th birthday.

2006

Victor Mishcon, Baron of Lambeth passes away. Prime Minister Tony Blair leads the tributes.
