It’s business but it’s no longer just personal. It’s also about being responsible, sustainable and accountable. Our recent B Corp certification is a natural extension of the kind of firm that we have always wanted to be. We have always believed in the broader role that the law firm should play in society. From the day we opened our doors in 1937 we championed the lawyer’s place in public life and we stressed the importance of a socially-conscious spirit. Even before firms talked about values, we wanted to be a values-based firm. More recently we formalised our aims and re-wrote our constitution. These aims were now at the heart of the firm: to improve access to justice; to encourage and create opportunity; to make sustainability a reality; and to ensure diversity in the legal profession. In a world that expects business to be a force for good, we believe B Corp status is a must. The independent certification means that an organisation meets "the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.” It also means that we are now part of a global community, 3500 B Corp firms ready to redefine what constitutes success in business and build more inclusive and sustainable economies. It is the latest tangible manifestation of our commitment to being the business we have always aspired to be.
