Miles Geffin in Legal Brief magazine on maintaining the competitive advantage of Britain’s legal system

Posted on 26 November 2021

Miles Geffin, Legal Director and private client lawyer at Mishcon de Reya, was quoted in Legal Brief in relation to recommendations from the Social Market Foundation on how Britain can maintain the international supremacy of English law.

The article follows the SMF’s recent report, sponsored by Mishcon de Reya, about the current capabilities and relevancy of English common law to handle disputes and contracts involving technological innovations, blockchain, AI, biotechnology, and green finance. The report found that the British legal system currently risks falling behind, when compared to international counterparts such as Singapore.

Building on concerns raised in the report, Miles Geffin highlighted to Legal Brief the issues around recruitment and retention, and that the deficit of judges is a “significant problem,” and that “more high quality judges would mean a faster, less costly court system.”

The article also covers the SMF report’s recommendations that improving the quality of English law and the civil justice system needs to be made a higher priority among policymakers.
