European Parliament issues report accusing European Commission of putting political considerations ahead of citizens' fundamental rights

Posted on 8 December 2020

The European Parliament issued a damning report accusing the European Commission of putting political considerations ahead of compliant citizens' fundamental rights to privacy, data protection and data security.

Mishcon de Reya has been relentless in raising data protection concerns in relation to FATCA as well as the CRS, with appearances before the European Parliament, more than 30 letters sent to the EU and legal challenges in the UK and various EU countries. Most recently, Partner Filippo Noseda made an appearance before the European Parliament in connection with a petition brought by an individual known as 'J.R.'.

Filippo Noseda said: 'There is a growing tide in favour of our campaign. The European Parliament has just censored the European Commission for its inactivity and we have been able to show an inconsistent behaviour between various European data protection authorities. Whilst the battle continues, we have reached a turning point.'
