We believe that sustainability has to be part of the DNA of any healthy business, shaping all its objectives – whether these are concerned with governance, social responsibility or profitability. We also believe that sustainability can only be achieved through change, and responsibility for that sits with each of us, individually and collectively.
We pursue these objectives by taking a holistic approach that brings together our staff, the way we do business, and the paid and pro bono services that we provide. It is only by acting in such a ‘joined up’ way that we can achieve the sustainable future we aspire to. It enables us to fully understand the challenges and opportunities that change presents; support staff and stakeholders who are the shapers and drivers of sustainable change; and leverage our legal expertise.
We focus on two particular areas:
We are proud to be legal partner to B Lab, the non-profit that strives to turn business as a force for good into a global movement. B Lab’s initiatives include B Corp Certification, administration of the B Impact Management programmes and software, and advocacy for governance structures like the benefit corporation. In the first half of 2020, we are undertaking a participatory review of our own business at the same time as we advise other businesses on their journey to sustainability.
This year, and every subsequent year, we are committed to being a net carbon zero business. This commitment stems from a Firm policy, which has progressively driven emissions down year on year while offsetting any unavoidable emissions. Throughout 2020, we are working with our staff, clients and partners to shape a more supportive landscape for individuals and businesses to offset their unavoidable emissions.
With other leading UK law firms, we have also set up the Legal Sustainability Alliance and the Chancery Lane project, a focused and collaborative effort by UK lawyers to develop new contracts and model laws that help fight climate change.
