On the 28 February, Mishcon de Reya and NVIDIA hosted an event focused on AI policy and regulation.

Guest speakers Rafah El-Khatib and Max Beverton-Palmer from NVIDIA were joined by Partners at Mishcon de Reya, Ashley Williams and James Boyle, to provide an overview of the trustworthy AI policy in the UK and EU.

At the event, we explored the main principles of AI trustworthiness and the impending regulations set to come into force in 2024. We also discussed the ways in which NVIDIA and Mishcon de Reya can support startups and scaleups on their journey towards innovation.

So NVIDIA is the world’s largest artificial intelligence computing company, they are one of the biggest players in this space right now.  So having the guest speakers like Rafa talk to us about empowering start-ups and Max as the Head of Public Policy for the UK explain to us how important it is to have the Public Policy angle is a real gift for our client base.

Rafah El-Khatib
Inception Program Manager, AI Platforms & ME Start-Ups Europe at NVIDIA

What we do at NVIDIA is we try to build platforms that are future proof or that sort of predict what kind of technologies would be beneficial and essential for the advancement of AI and technological advancement in general.  So things like drug discovery, protein embedding and co-holding DNA sequencing can only be achieved nowadays with accelerated computing.

Max Beverton-Palmer
Head of Public Policy, UK at NVIDIA

The partnership with Mishcon is really important and especially with regards to our inception program, our start-up programme at NVIDIA.  Building trustworthiness is a collective endeavour across the AI industry, across civil society, government and regulation.

James Boyle
Partner, Mishcon de Reya

One of the most difficult things that I find when we are working through AI assessments with our clients is actually looking at all, what risks could materialise here and a model card is incredibly useful resource, usually produced by the developer that essentially explains the testing process they went through, it will give you details on what kind of risks they’ve identified throughout the process.

Piers Linney
Co Founder, Implement AI

That ally today is by NVIDIA and Mishcon de Reya.  This is really something that’s really important.  It’s often forgotten.  It’s about any policy, compliance and governance, all the way from the boardroom down to actually when we implement AI, how do you apply it.  Well the risk is really quite important.

Ed Turner
Chair, Mishcon Future

A surprise to a lot of people is the understanding that regulation can actually be a driver for growth, certainty encourages investment and certainty encourages businesses to be able to innovate within the known structure they can rely on.

Mishcon de Reya
It’s business. But it’s personal.
