Tim Thompson

Personal Profile

Tim Thompson is Of Counsel in the White Collar Crime Group, part of Mishcon de Reya's Fraud & Dispute Resolution team.

He has over twenty years' experience in criminal law, dealing with a range of complex and high profile matters including: fraud; organised crime; corruption; international cooperation; applications for a retrial where double jeopardy applies; private prosecutions; and proceeds of crime. He joined Mishcon de Reya in 2015, from the CPS, where he was the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor in charge of the London Complex Casework Unit. During his time at the CPS he also acted as Legal Advisor to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Tim is responsible for advice and litigation on regulatory and criminal matters including: bribery; fraud; private prosecutions; confiscation of assets; and criminal defence. His experience and insight as a former prosecutor has proven to be immensely valuable when acting for clients, whether they are victims or suspects.

Key Experience

Tim's work frequently involves dealing with cases discreetly, before they develop to a stage that would be damaging to clients' interests.  

Tim has had responsibility for the conduct of a range of serious and high profile matters including:

  • Liaison and negotiation with the authorities in other jurisdictions including cases with joint investigation teams
  • Organised crime cases
  • Complex international fraud and money laundering cases
  • Cases of alleged misconduct by police officers and other public officials
  • Complex immigration and human trafficking cases
  • Cases involving civil and public law proceedings

As Legal Advisor to the Director of Public Prosecutions he dealt with a range of high profile and sensitive matters, including:

  • Appearing before a House of Lords Select Committee
  • Making recommendations for changes to CPS policy, in light of judicial calls to the DPP to do so
  • Advising on intervention in private prosecutions
  • Domestic extremism
  • Serious fraud alleged in relation to a government contract
