Richard is a Legal Director in the Dispute Resolution department with expertise in UK sanctions regulations, advising individual and corporate clients in both an advisory and contentious capacity, and coordinating international sanctions advice from the US, EU, and other jurisdictions.
Richard has deep experience and expertise advising clients across the various jurisdictional regimes (Russia, Belarus, Iran, Libya, Venezuela, etc.). He advises on complex multi-jurisdictional sanctions compliance matters including asset freeze provisions, ownership-and-control issues, sectoral sanctions regimes, and the design and implementation of enterprise-wide sanctions compliance programmes for international trading operations. He also advises on voluntary disclosures to OFSI/OTSI, licence applications, and regulatory investigations, securing favourable outcomes for clients through transparent engagement with regulators.
Richard has advised on sanctions-related issues for approximately a decade, and his practice has grown substantially since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He is now a regular point of contact for corporate and individual clients seeking UK and international sanctions advice. Richard has led initiatives to cement Mishcon de Reya's reputation as a centre of excellence in sanctions law and has spoken at the International Fraud Group conference as an expert on sanctions.
Richard also has a broader commercial litigation and civil fraud practice, advising high-profile clients on complex disputes and successfully managing asset-tracing exercises, multi-jurisdictional claims, and enforcement proceedings involving high-value assets. He acts for both individual and corporate clients in a range of disputes involving breach of contract, breach of confidence, breach of fiduciary duty, data theft and cyber security. He assists victims of fraud by obtaining injunctive relief in order to secure assets and evidence, including search orders, freezing orders and disclosure orders.
