Sally Britton in the Guardian discussing "Sussex Royal" Trade Mark

Posted on 13 January 2020

Partner and Head of our Brands Group Sally Britton has been quoted in the Guardian, discussing the importance of brand protection for the Sussexes.

Last June, the royal couple's advisors filed trade mark applications to UK intellectual property authorities for the brand "Sussex Royal", for a range of goods and activities.

An application has now been filed with EU authorities for their would-be brand "Sussex Royal" by someone who appears to be based in Italy. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex now face having to potentially make an objection to protect the "Sussex Royal" brand internationally.

Speaking on the matter, Sally said: “They clearly have a successful brand. The question is whether the Queen will permit them to continue to use ‘royal’ and the crown in their logo or if they intend to attempt to continue use it internationally regardless of her wishes. There could be a rebrand for the Sussexes but they could also create a very interesting development regarding the future role of the monarchy and its funding.”
