Mario is a Partner in the Innovation department with expertise in life sciences transactions, specialising in strategic IP licensing, collaboration and partnering transactions for pharmaceutical, biotech, medtech and digital health clients.
He advises on the development and exploitation of patents and other intellectual property, including in- and out-licensing, research collaborations, option agreements and technology transfer, often involving complex technologies and global scope. He also supports clients on M&A, joint ventures, asset acquisitions and disposals, and high-value manufacturing, supply and outsourcing arrangements. His clients range from university spin-outs and venture-backed biotechs to global pharmaceutical companies, investors and government.
Before qualifying as a solicitor, Mario worked as a research scientist in tumour immunology and molecular biology, and he has spent a significant part of his career as in-house counsel at prominent life sciences companies, including Sanofi and Syngenta. This gives him a deep understanding of both the science and the commercial drivers behind complex deals, and he is known for clear, pragmatic advice.
Mario played a key role advising the UK Government's Vaccine Taskforce and Antivirals and Therapeutics Taskforce on the supply of COVID-19 vaccines and antiviral therapies, and on the world's first COVID-19 human challenge study. He has been recognised as a Key Lawyer for Life Sciences by The Legal 500 and as a Notable Practitioner by IP Stars.
