Virgin Media O2 signs the Greener Litigation Associate Member Pledge

Posted on 10 January 2024

Virgin Media O2 has committed to reducing the environmental impact of litigation by becoming the latest organisation to become a Greener Litigation Associate Member.

The Associate Member Pledge provides an opportunity for organisations that participate in litigation, but are not litigation businesses, to support Greener Litigation's work and achieve progress in the transition to Net Zero carbon emissions.

As part of its sustainability strategy, the Better Connections Plan, Virgin Media O2 aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions across its operations, products and supply chain (Scopes 1, 2 and 3 emissions) by the end of 2040.

Last year, the company reduced its carbon emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) by 29% against its 2020 baseline, and prevented more than 29 million tonnes of carbon entering Earth’s atmosphere.

Virgin Media O2’s net zero target has also been validated by the renowned Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and it became the first UK telco to be recognised by the Carbon Trust for its net zero plan, being awarded the Advancing Level of the organisation’s Route to Net Zero Standard.

The Greener Litigation Associate Member Pledge states:

"Our organisation is committed to taking steps to reduce the environmental impact of our business. We support the objectives of the Greener Litigation Pledge. We are committed to minimising the environmental impact of litigation in which we are involved in line with the Greener Litigation Pledge, including requesting any litigation professionals we engage to do the same."

Enrique Medina Malo, General Counsel at Virgin Media O2, said:

“By signing the Greener Litigation Pledge, we’re building on our commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions across our operations, products, and supply chain by the end of 2040.

“It means our legal team and suppliers will play an active role in helping us to reduce our impact on the planet, and in-line with climate science to help prevent global temperatures from rising above 1.5 degrees.”

Olivia Wybraniec, Managing Associate Barrister and Greener Litigation Steering Committee Co-Chair, commented:

"Virgin Media O2 becomes the fifth Associate Member, and the 125th organisations to confirm its support for sustainable conduct of dispute resolution by joining Greener Litigation. Each of our Associate Members send a powerful message to the lawyers they instruct and suppliers they use, as well as to other organisations, that sustainability must be a central consideration in how we conduct litigation. We welcome Virgin Media O2 as an Associate Member and look forward to working with them to encourage others to sign the Greener Litigation Pledge and conduct litigation sustainably."
