Tapping up is rife, say frustrated clubs

Survey of Premier League and Football League clubs reveals tapping up is rife and regulations inadequate.

As the transfer window slides shut for another summer on Wednesday clubs across all four divisions believe that 'tapping up' — approaching players without their current club’s consent — remains rife in football and that current regulations do not sufficiently protect clubs from predators.

Mishcon de Reya, who has acted for clubs in the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga, recommends that the rules be drastically altered.

It proposes abolishing the rules for players aged over 23, leaving clubs to rely on contract law for compensation, and focusing on preventing young players being poached from the club’s that developed them.
