Black History Month: Black Health and Wellness

DateTimeOnline

As part of our Black History Month 2022 (BHM) celebrations, our racial equity committee EMBRACE will host a topical panel discussion facilitated by Health and Safety Partner Kizzy Augustin.

The panel will discuss Black health and wellness – the theme for this year's BHM – and will highlight some of the health related issues faced by Black people; for example, racial disparities in healthcare, Black men and mental health, fake news and its impact on COVID-19 deaths of people in the Black community.

We have an esteemed panel covering the legal, medical and media sectors, and while we will bring deserved public attention to important developments in Black health and wellness, we will also focus on celebrating contributions made by Black professionals and discuss the ways in which we are seeking solutions, both as a firm and in the wider community.

Panellists:

Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu is a lawyer and activist who is vocal on women's rights issues, politics, diversity, inequality and exclusion. Her first book, This is Why I Resist: Don't Define My Black Identity, tackles contemporary issues surrounding race, racism and race inclusion.

Dr Errol Francis is an artist, former mental health campaigner and is the current CEO of Culture&, an independent arts and education charity aiming to promote diversity in the workforce and expand audiences. He has co-authored and contributed to various inquiry reports and book chapters with a particular focus on black mental health.

Dr Christine Ekechi is an acute gynaecology and early pregnancy specialist and an established obstetrician. She is the Co-Chair of the Race Equality Taskforce at the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and also sits on the board as a Trustee for gynaecology cancer charity, The Eve Appeal.
