Separating or divorcing? Know your property rights when breaking up

Barbara Reeves, Family Partner, has commented in Aviva's article on knowing your property rights when a relationship has come to an end. Monday 6 January is known as 'Divorce Monday', due to the high number of couples filing for divorce.

Aviva's article looks at what you have to bear in mind if you are splitting with a spouse later in life. Barbara comments on the misconception that those living together over a certain length of time have the same rights around property as married couples.

Barbara says, "Where cohabiting parties break up, they have no automatic rights to make financial claims against each other; there is no such thing as ‘common law marriage’.”
