This course builds practical skills in commercial contract drafting. Over one day, you'll work through practical exercises covering the key clauses that appear in most commercial agreements, including warranties, indemnities, liability limitations and IP provisions. It's designed for in-house counsel and commercial lawyers, whether you're relatively new to contract drafting or looking to sharpen your skills. The course is aimed at 0-4 PQE in-house lawyers and commercial lawyers, but can also be a useful refresher for those who are more experienced. The trainer, Alexa Lamont, has spent over a decade working in-house, so the training reflects how contract drafting actually works in practice, not just in theory. The workshop uses a supply of services agreement as a case study.
Why this matters now
AI drafting tools are changing how contracts are drafted. Junior lawyers who once spent years learning by doing—reviewing clauses, spotting issues, understanding what works—now have AI assistants to help. But relying on AI support without building your own foundational expertise is risky. How do legal teams ensure their lawyers can critically assess what AI suggests, know when to override it, and exercise the judgement that technology can't provide? The answer is regular, practical training that builds core drafting skills.
Why invest in this training?
- Risk management: Poorly drafted contracts cost businesses millions in disputes and missed opportunities
- Team development: Whether you're onboarding new lawyers or refreshing the skills of experienced practitioners, foundational knowledge is key
- Bridging the AI skills gap: Technology will change how contracts are produced, but you need sound drafting and negotiation skills to critically assess and correct AI output.
