IFG Hackathon 2022

Posted on 13 May 2022

On 12 May 2022, Mishcon de Reya hosted an event to announce the winners of the first International Fraud Group (IFG) Hackathon. The hackathon was organised in conjunction with Stop The Traffik and Traffik Analysis Hub, leaders in the fight against people trafficking.

The competition ran over three months and featured participation from almost a thousand teams from 101 countries around the world. The teams were asked to create a prototype solution that could scan available company data and highlight examples of suspected people trafficking within the palm oil industry.

Shortlisted submissions were reviewed by a judging panel comprising Ruth Dearnley OBE, CEO of Stop The Traffik, Clive Humby OBE, Principal at H&D Advisory, Dr. Jasmine Grimsley Ph. D, Chief Technical Advisor at The London Data Company and Neil Giles, CEO of the Traffik Analysis Hub.

The team that emerged victorious was DeGaYa, hailing from Indonesia. Whilst they had enjoyed some success in other hackathons in Indonesia this was their first international recognition. The judges praised the use of third-party data within the solution and "almost perfect storytelling" with their data visualisation.

The IFG's partnership with Stop The Traffik is part of the Group's commitment to use their world-leading ability to disrupt illegal financial activities as a force for good.

This video features a summary of the hackathon journey and a demo of the winning submission is available here.

IFG Hackathon 2022
Gary Miller, Chairman, International Fraud Group

In order to try and find some brainy techies who could come up with some kind of formula, an algorithm to help us identify people trafficking, we came up with an idea of the IFG sponsoring and managing a Hackathon.

Dr Jasmine Grimsley, Hackathon Judge & Chief Technical Advisor, The London Data Company

The participants in the Hackathon did a really good job of stepping back away from the question, looking around at the other data types that could be used to really bring together novel and interesting ways of approaching these data.

We were very pleasantly surprised by the standard of the submissions.  We got a thousand applicants and it was a tough job picking the top two winners.
