The Academy is pleased to welcome Jeff Dudgeon MBE. Jeff is a Northern Irish politician, historian and gay rights campaigner who has played a leading role in Northern Ireland's history. In 2021 Northern Ireland turns 100 years old and we welcome Jeff to discuss how gay rights have evolved over this period.
Jeff is best known for bringing a case to the European Court of Human Rights which successfully challenged Northern Ireland's laws criminalising consensual sexual acts between men in private. Jeff continues to work on gay law reform issues. He liaises with the police concerning crimes against the LGBTQ+ community and assists those charged with criminal offences or in other legal difficulties.
Jeff was awarded an MBE in 2012 for “services to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in Northern Ireland.” He has continued working on a series of campaigns getting reforms like Civil Partnership and equalised age of consent laws passed into law in Northern Ireland.
