Welcome to the third module of the Mishcon Sports Law Academy 2022/23.
In this module, we will look back on the key developments in the financial regulation of football over the past 12 months including: (i) Manchester City being charged by the Premier League for breaching the Premier League Rules; (ii) the introduction of a new Independent Regulator of English Football following the Fan-Led Review of Football Governance; and (iii) the plans to create a new European Super League; (iv) how other leagues from across Europe are dealing with these issues.

John Potterill-Tilney
John is the Director of the Independent Club Financial Reporting Unit of the English Football League – a body that is responsible for reviewing the financial regulatory submissions of the 72 EFL clubs and assesses each club's compliance against the relevant rules.
Jane Purdon
Jane Purdon is a Director at Women in Football. Having qualified as a lawyer and in 2001 Jane was appointed Club Secretary and Solicitor at Sunderland AFC, the club’s first ever in-house lawyer and one of the first such appointments by a Premier League club. In 2005 she joined the Premier League, enjoying 10 eventful years where she rose to become the Premier League’s Director of Governance.
Kieran Maguire
Kieran Maguire is a is a British academic, author, and broadcaster. He specialises in the accountancy of association football and authored the book The Price of Football. Kieran presents a twice-weekly podcast entitled The Price of Football in which football finances are discussed.
Nick De Marco KC
Nick De Marco KC is ranked as one of the leading barristers in Sports Law. He regularly acts for sports governing bodies, players, clubs, sponsors, broadcasters and agents. He is the ‘go to’ barrister in disputes in football in particular, whether commercial or regulatory.
