Case Study – Video Conferencing Security

Posted on 23 November 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned businesses ‘inside out’. The resistance to widespread use of video conferencing disappeared overnight.

Our client wanted to understand the risks associated with various security platforms, and what security would need to be applied. They were keen to balance the cost of corporate platforms with free but potentially riskier alternatives. The client needed an answer quickly, as they were worried that various platforms were being used by staff and the risk to the business was increasing.

Our team uses a proprietary threat model for communications security risks, which was used alongside research by our cyber threat intelligence team.

We conducted technical analysis of the platforms identified against our threat model, as well as comparing features, costs and overall security postures of the platforms.

This was combined with our knowledge of the clients' internal environment and roadmap to produce an overarching strategy for secure videoconferencing as well as specific guidance on securing each platform.

Our client was able to quickly implement the strategy we proposed, and our technical analysis backed up their initial concerns. They were able to balance business concerns to reduce expenditure against appropriate security controls.

Within three days the client was able to communicate the new approach to the business, ensuring that they did not expose themselves further.
