We are here this evening in a really vibrant atmosphere to convene businesses, to convene funders, to convene people that are advising businesses around making The Leap and The Leap is really a coming together of people talking about the explosive growth agenda.  How can we ensure as a country that we get business growing exponentially rather than very slowly and incrementally.  And this is the first of two dates, this is called ‘The Game Changers’ and tonight we have seem a bunch of people – James Averdieck, Founder of Gü, Lara Morgan, Founder of Pacific Direct, Annabel Karmel, Founder of Annabel Karmel Foods, Will King, Founder of King of Shaves, Sir Rod Aldridge, the Founder of Capita.  Massive businesses all the way down to sort of twenty, thirty million pound businesses.  We have seen them talk about what it takes to be an entrepreneur.  They are the game changers in the business world today.

I think it is very possible to grow a business that cam grow very rapidly.  I think you have got to choose your market.  I think you have got to differentiate yourself very much from any competitors and indeed shape the market, don’t follow and if you do that and have a good team I think anything is possible.

James Averdieck
Founder – Gü Puds & The Coconut Collaboration

You have got to have a good idea, you’ve got to have a scalable idea and then you need good people

Sara Murray
Founder – Confused.com & Buddi

You know I founded Buddi after I lost my daughter in a supermarket, turned round, heart stopping moment.  I was very lucky I found her quickly but I thought ‘why can’t I give her some technology that allows me to find her whenever I need to’.

Myra Nigris
Founder Hemyea

My business is actually Hemyea, we have a fashion designer label based in London.  We have a creative mind so it is a bit difficult because you are not taught at University to also engage your business side of your brain.

Alex Farrell
Managing Director – The IT Job Board

Our business is an on-line recruitment channel so companies that need good tech talent which is pretty much everyone these days can advertise with us, they can search our database of tech professionals.

Sara Murray
Founder – Confused.com & Buddi

In the UK we are quite good at not stopping people creating innovative stuff in new markets by allowing other people to patent.  In the US that is very different.  We have come across US companies who try to stop us entering their markets using their patents and I am really grateful that we don’t do that here in the UK.

Alex Farrell
Managing Director – The IT Job Board

At the moment while we are innovating sometimes we are unclear of whether or not it is legally acceptable or not so for example, it’s okay to launch our social recruitment platform in the UK, it may be slightly more difficult to do in Germany because there are different data protection laws in Germany.

Sir Rod Aldridge
The Aldridge Foundation

Young entrepreneurs have got to be encouraged and they have got to be stimulated and supported and we have got to get away from this culture in the UK that if you fail then you are a failure because I don’t think you are.  Overall the quality is the issue.  If you have got a good quality product and you look after your customers they will stay with you.

The next event ‘The Power of Partnerships’ is happening in a few months’ time and we will bring together people talking about partnerships and how they take businesses on to an explosive growth platform.  Coming out of that in the next few months we hope to produce the reports which captures the learning we talked a lot about, we’ve asked a lot of questions this evening, we’ve asked the audience what they think; we are putting all that together and we will distill it into what we think will be a fascinating report and we are very very excited at Mishcon to be part of creating The Leap.
