Mishcon de Reya and RCAN briefing dedicated to Russia, Ukraine and the CIS

Posted on 19 July 2019

At the end of June, Mishcon de Reya and the Russian and CIS Arbitration Network ("RCAN") hosted the first in a series of regional updates dedicated to Russia, Ukraine and the CIS.

Elena Burova (Counsel at the Russian Arbitration Centre, Moscow), Serhii Uvarov (Counsel at Integrites law firm, Kyiv) and Dinara Jarmukhanova (partner at Centil Law firm, Almaty), joined a web conference hosted at Mishcon de Reya to participate from their jurisdictions, whilst Ulugbek Gulomov, (Business Development and Marketing Executive at Centil Law, Uzbekistan), and Zachary Segal from Mishcon de Reya's arbitration practice, spoke on developments from Uzbekistan and the UK respectively.

The practitioners presented on key developments from their jurisdictions, including cases, legislative developments, judicial reforms and political events. Chaired by Stephanie Balsys, Secretary of RCAN and Managing Associate at Mishcon de Reya, the aim of the session was to connect people with an interest and expertise in arbitration connected to the region, and to facilitate the exchange of experience and ideas within the network.

The discussion ranged widely, addressing the arbitration of corporate disputes and the authorisation of foreign arbitral institutions, recent arbitration-related cases about the enforcement of interim awards and emergency arbitral awards, the public policy defence in enforcement proceedings and the examination of counsel's powers in arbitration proceedings, security measures in arbitration, the opening up of the energy markets in Ukraine and Uzbekistan, trends in the use of English law across the region, the new Tashkent International Arbitration Centre, the International Arbitration Centre in London and recent developments at the AIFC in Kazakhstan.

We would like to thank our speakers and participants, and we look forward to the next event in the series.
