Mishcon de Reya has partnered with Outset, an independent and international charity that provides bespoke funding solutions for contemporary art, to support the continuation of the Teen Tours educational programme at The Photographers' Gallery and to enable the roll out of the scheme to three new partner organisations from 2017 until 2020.
Teen Tours is an educational programme, designed to empower disadvantaged young people, comprising a series of public talks researched and delivered by young speakers aged 13-19 at The Photographers' Gallery. It does this by recruiting young speakers from underachieving schools and youth centres in areas of economic or social deprivation. Using a real life, work-based situation, Teen Tours supports young thinkers through the process of research, rehearsal, delivery, feedback and follow up, giving them an opportunity to develop their critical thinking and public speaking skills in relation to exhibitions. In turn, this offers broad audiences new perspectives on the exhibitions based on the young speakers’ experiences and ideas.
The three-year partnership between Outset and Mishcon de Reya will build on the success of The Photographers' Gallery's programme to date, extending it to some of London's best loved museums. The Outset Teen Tours will take place at: The Wallace Collection (2017 – 2020); The Horniman Museum & Gardens (2018 – 2020); Royal Museums Greenwich (2019 – 2020); as well as The Photographers' Gallery (2017 – 2020).
Commenting on the partnership, Candida Gertler OBE, Director of Outset Contemporary Art Fund, England, said:
“We've been supporting this extraordinary initiative since 2014, and it is an honour to have Mishcon de Reya join us in furthering responsive art philanthropy that has a real, lasting impact on the lives of young people. Teen Tours gives disadvantaged young people an opportunity to develop their critical thinking and public speaking skills proving that the artistic environment can play a huge role in furthering communication between communities. Through our partnership, we will have the means to continue Teen Tours and in turn increase the number of young people and audience members who benefit from these wonderful young speaker’s new perspectives on art."
Brett Rogers of The Photographers' Gallery said:
“We are delighted to be partnering with Mishcon de Reya whose interest in and support of the arts through its award winning social impact programme make them a natural partner for our Teen Tours initiative. We're immensely proud of this programme and the benefits it has been delivering – both for participants and audiences – since its launch in 2005. Working with Mishcon de Reya alongside our continuing partners, Outset, means we will be able to extend the ambition and scale of the events and reach an even wider network of young people and audiences.”
Karen Sanig, Head of Art Law at Mishcon de Reya, added:
"We are really pleased to be partnering with Outset and The Photographers' Gallery on this brilliant project. At Mishcon de Reya, we believe in the expression of talent and inspiring and empowering individuals to fulfil their potential –Teen Tours does just that. Together it is our hope that we can make a real difference to the lives of more young people through our support of creative endeavours."
