Mishcon de Reya has announced that it has appointed cyber security expert, Joe Hancock, in its latest move to offer clients non-legal services that complement and support the legal advice it provides.
Joe is a recognised industry expert in cyber security and risk management as well as emerging areas such as cyber strategy and cyber insurance. He began his career in the Defence and National Security sector, was one of the first cyber specialists in the Lloyds insurance market supporting the underwriting of cyber risks, and has a held a variety of consulting roles at companies including PwC, Deloitte and BAE Systems. He has helped organisations prepare for cyber breaches and data loss events, to understand the risks they face and to respond when incidents occur.
As Cyber Security Lead at Mishcon de Reya, Joe will focus on helping clients safely realise the opportunities that the increasingly digital economy can provide, through strategic cyber advice, helping organisations to develop and optimise their investments in cyber risk management and protect their businesses and reputations. The recent loss of 500m records by Yahoo and the recent release of athlete heath data from WADA underscore the scale of cyber issues.
It was announced in May that Mishcon de Reya was participating in a pilot programme with the City of London Police to offer advice to victims of fraud and assist with asset recovery – the first time external law firms have been engaged in this way. The pilot will be trialled over the next two years, and could have huge implications for the future of cyber fraud enforcement, as cyber criminals are pursued through civil rather than criminal courts.
Commenting, Kasra Nouroozi, Head of Dispute Resolution at Mishcon de Reya, said: "We have long recognised that our clients' needs go beyond traditional legal advice - and this is particularly true in relation to issues surrounding digital security. Joe's appointment is in direct response to client demand. His expertise sits comfortably alongside many of our practice areas, notably the work undertaken by our fraud teams, which increasingly involves digital-related factors. Joe can offer insight into preventative measures to mitigate the risks of breaches, as well as advice on action to be taken once a breach has occurred. His experience allows us to offer a valuable additional service to our clients, and we are excited to welcome him to the team."
Joe's appointment follows that of Chief Strategy Officer, Nick West, who joined Mishcon de Reya in January, and demonstrates the ongoing focus on exploring uses of emerging technologies and services. In March, the firm launched Mishcon Discover, becoming the first UK firm to provide e-discovery services in partnership with a technology provider. Clients now have the option of having all of their e-Discovery activity managed by the lawyers working on their matters - with the support of the firm's in-house e-Discovery experts.
