Mishcon de Reya has announced that it has hired Shaistah Akhtar, who joined as a Partner in the firm's Dispute Resolution department on Monday 9th January. Shaistah was previously at KWM.
A highly experienced litigation lawyer, Shaistah's client base spans a number of industry sectors and jurisdictions, ranging from global investment banks, asset management firms, private equity houses and portfolio companies, to pharmaceutical companies, real estate developers, publishing houses, film production companies, software firms, and defence and aerospace groups, as well as high net worth individuals. Her practice often has an international element, and she has experience of litigation and investigations in a number of European, Middle Eastern and African jurisdictions.
Whilst at KWM, Shaistah was responsible for the co-ordination of the firm's Investigations, Fraud and Compliance group – including anti-bribery and international sanctions compliance/violation issues, particularly within the UK, EU and US legislative and regulatory regimes. Her experience ranges from representing senior individuals in Bahrain as part of the US$10 billion Saad v Al-Gosaibi investigation/litigation, acting for an insolvent UK investment fund on recovering multi-million pound damages in a claim for breach of duties against a regulated firm, to advising senior management in the Chinese Government's investigation of GSK.
Commenting on the appointment, Kasra Nouroozi, Head of Dispute Resolution at Mishcon de Reya, said: "Shaistah is an extremely well-respected litigator with experience that both complements and enhances our existing dispute resolution offering. Her expertise in fraud will add weight to our already market-leading practice, and her international experience will support our ongoing focus on international work in key jurisdictions across Africa, the Middle East and Asia. We are really excited to welcome her to the firm."
Shaistah added, "I am very happy to be joining Mishcon de Reya's internationally renowned litigation team which I have admired for many years both on the same side and other side of various cases."
