Mishcon de Reya announces recipient of Academy Research Grant as Sam Fowles, PhD student at Queen Mary, University of London

Mishcon de Reya is pleased to announce that Sam Fowles, PhD student in Law at Queen Mary, University of London, is the recipient of The Academy Research Grant.

The purpose of the research is to further the agenda of The Academy this year – 'Challenges to the rule of law' – and to identify themes that contribute to current debates, and are also relevant to the businesses of Mishcon de Reya's clients and the industries in which they operate.

The subject of Sam's research is 'Threats to the Rule of Law: TTIP, Sovereignty and Judicial Selection and Consistency': it will explore controversies surrounding The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), most specifically the proposed Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) clause.

Sam explains: "While ISDS has been analysed from a commercial law standpoint (including by Queen Mary’s Centre for Commercial Law Studies), no one has yet undertaken a substantive analysis from a constitutional law perspective. This is an important gap in scholarship because TTIP will have significant constitutional and public law impact."

Anthony Julius, Deputy Chairman of Mishcon de Reya and Director of The Academy, added: "Sam is an outstanding young scholar, and his research topic  is of great significance to many of our clients, and the wider business community."

The research report (of no more than 10,000 words) will be delivered by Monday 13th April 2015 and published soon after.
