£42K raised for Lewa's Education Programme

In September 2015, Mishcon de Reya launched its biggest ever fundraising challenge: to raise £42,000 to build a girls’ dormitory for Wildlife conservation charity Lewa at Ngare Ndare Secondary School as part of Lewa's Education Programme. The firm has today confirmed that, through the effort and generosity of everyone its people, it has completed the challenge.

The dormitory will allow the girls to study without the fear of making the long journey to and from home, which puts them in danger of rape and coercion and, without the structure and protection of the school, probable early marriage. Building work is currently underway and the dormitory will be ready for occupation in January 2017.  Following this success, the firm has committed to raising £38,000 for a teachers' dormitory at the school by November 2017.

Mike Watson, CEO at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, said:  “Thanks to Mishcon’s fundraising for this new girls’ dormitory, an even safer and stronger foundation is being built to ensure children stay healthy and protected. Giving them the opportunity to attend school, pursue their dreams, and help to pull their families and communities out of poverty.”

Director of External Affairs at Mishcon de Reya, Lisa Tremble, added: "We are very proud that we reached our target and will consequently be able to make a real difference to the lives of these girls. Social impact is at the heart of Mishcon de Reya's core values, and this challenge represents our mission to effect change in a measureable way. We are being more ambitious than ever before about what we are seeking to achieve through our Social Impact Programme."
