As NHS managers and some UK business executives rush to patch their IT systems after last week’s global ransomware attack, many will be chuntering to themselves: whom can we sue?

To their credit, some lawyers have been disarmingly frank in their uncertainty. “There will be a large global investigation into these attacks, and it is probable that some of the perpetrators will be identified,” says Joe Hancock, a cybersecurity expert at the London law firm Mishcon de Reya, before warning: “It is unlikely that all those responsible will be held to account.”
