Tougher standards on gambling advertising announced

On 14 February, the ASA announced tougher standards on gambling advertising.

The new standards will come into effect on 2 April 2018. The ASA will use the standards when considering future complaints about ads.

It is important that your Marketing PML holders and marketing teams are aware of these developments.

  • A copy of the Regulatory Statement, which sets out the background, process, evidence and outcome of our consultation on new rules for gambling advertisers is available here. It should be read in conjunction with Annexures A-D.
  • A copy of the Responsibility and problem gambling guidance (Annex A of the Regulatory Statement) is available here. A link to the ASA webpage announcing this guidance is available here.
  • A copy of the Guidance for Advertisers of Free Bets and Bonuses is available here – it includes guidance relating to adverts where time or space is limited and provides guidance as to what is a "significant condition". It also provides requirements for the terms "Money back", "Risk Free" and "Matched Bets" (page 5). A link to the ASA webpage announcing this guidance is available here.

Later this year, CAP will publish further guidance focusing on the protection of children and young people.
