Mishcon's proptech transformation

Behind Mishcon de Reya’s elegant Africa House doors, property work has turned into something of a Petri dish for technology and innovation.

For law firms operating in the real estate market there is a common theme: the strain on fees and the need for speed. Mishcon recognised that it had to react to this market dynamic.

The firm’s real estate department is blazing a technology trail, thanks primarily to a trio of Nicks (or, as one wag puts it, ‘Nick Cubed’) who all work either in or with the group: Doffman, West and Kirby.

Nick Doffman is Mishcon’s real estate group head with more than 25 years’ experience in dealing with all aspects of commercial property.

Nick West is the firm’s chief strategy officer and innovation team head. He joined in January 2016 from tech-enabled alternative legal services provider Axiom, where he had been head of the London office. Prior to that West was a competition lawyer at Linklaters and had been a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Co.

The third Nick is Nick Kirby, once a Mishcon trainee and now a managing associate in the real estate group.

Nick West credits Mishcon legal director Julie Bond with coming up with one of the firm’s neatest new ideas – Mishcon Maps. All three Nicks report that legal director Bond was instrumental in how Mishcon’s real estate team uses AI. As Bond points out, this allows her "to spend more time solving legal issues rather than being immersed in administration".
