Susan Breen, Head of Mishcon de Reya's Betting & Gaming group, attended KPMG's inaugural Malta eSummit. Taking part in a discussion entitled 'Complexities of Compliance' with a panel of industry experts, Susan discussed the increasing regulation in the gambling sector – including the Fourth Anti-Money Laundering Directive, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and changes to Point of Consumption regimes across the EU and the impact this will have on gaming companies.
Speaking on the sometimes conflicting interests of regulators, operators and players, Susan said: "There’s a gap between what the regulators want … what they think they should be asking for in this climate … what the operators feel is proportionate and, actually, what the players want. When you have that real tension and a raft of conflicting legislation I have sympathy with the operators’ position, as it’s confusing. My advice is, keep calm, don’t panic and try to look at it from a proportionate risk and business case point of view."
