Jon Baines, Data Protection Advisor in the Litigation Group, has been quoted in the Global Data Review in relation to the UK's data watchdog's suggestion that data transfers to non-EEA countries may be unrestricted by GDPR, providing the recipient is already subject to the EU rules.
In response to whether this is a blueprint for Brexit Jon says, "That’s something that’s looming over all of it, but they seem to be avoiding connecting the two. However, when the UK leaves the EU, it will be a ‘third country’ for the purposes of GDPR – and it will be offering goods and services to those in the EU. There’ll be any number of UK companies doing that, so for those data controllers in the EU this will be a very important issue.”
