England's Jesse Lingard trademarks his goal celebration

Jonty Warner, Associate in the Intellectual Property Group, was quoted in CityAM discussing Jesse Lingard's recent applications for a trade mark.

Lingard applied for four trade marks with the UK Intellectual Property Office, three featuring his nickname 'Jlingz' and another featuring the image of his goal celebration. These were filed via the company JLINGZ LTD, of which he is a director.

Jonty said, “He’s filed them all in about the space of two weeks and they all cover trade mark class 25 essentially covering clothing, footwear and headgear.”

He added: "When [Gareth] Bale applied for similar trade marks it was reported that he’d trade marked the celebration itself which was slightly misleading. What it gave Bale the power to do is prevent other traders from using that logo in the course of trade.”

The timing of this is significant, as the World Cup is a huge platform from which to launch a personal brand.
