Allowing gay people to be open about themselves improves performance at work. It’s not about being nice, it’s a business imperative.

Despite being out whilst studying at Cambridge, Emma Woollcott chose not to be open about her sexuality when she started training at a Magic Circle law firm 12 years ago. “I remember being quite guarded as a trainee, thinking that a lot of people around my level and my age knew I was gay, but none of the partners and my supervisors knew,” said Woollcott, 35, now an associate.
