Mishcon de Reya Deputy Chairman and Director of The Academy, Professor Anthony Julius, has been appointed as Chair in Law and Arts at UCL. On Thursday 15 March, ahead of his inaugural lecture, he featured on BBC Radio 4's Today programme to discuss his new role - the first of its kind in the United Kingdom.

Speaking to John Humphrys, Anthony said:

"I'll be looking at why it is that proper, functioning societies - happy societies - need both a stable legal system and also need the arts. How we really can't do without either. So I'll be celebrating the union of law and the arts in a good society, as well as exploring the conflicts between them.

"Questions such as how we negotiate the relationship between the obligation to be civil and the right to provoke is one that lawyers, but not just lawyers, have to address daily. Artists should interrogate the questions: I don't think they should be contained by them, but I think they should explore them. Sometimes, in the exploration of the questions, offence is given. That, I think, is a really small price to pay for the pleasure that art gives us."
