Following the decision made by the National Portrait Gallery not to proceed with a proposed £1m donation from the Sackler Trust amid allegations of "artwashing", Andrew Goldstone spoke with iNews.
Arts institutions will have to beef up their ethics committees and ensure that funding decisions are communicated in a transparent manner to the public. Andrew Goldstone, partner at law firm Mishcon de Reya, said: “It is clear that the NPG has weighed up the benefits that this donation would bring, and the potential reputational fall out accepting it would cause.”
He added:“Even if nothing is proven and the prospective donor is merely subject to unfounded allegations, the risk of adverse publicity and reputational damage to the recipient charity will usually be enough to justify a polite ‘No thanks’.”
