Public Advocacy

Mishcon’s involvement in public advocacy began with its founder, Lord Mishcon who was a Labour peer and acted as a broker for the peace accord between Israel and Jordan.  This aspect of Mishcon’s practice has been formalised with the creation of a Public Advocacy Group which bridges the gap between traditional and legal practice and lobbying.  Clients include interests groups, non-profit making organisations, charities and companies.

The Group advances its clients' interests by advising on the potential for improving existing campaigns through legal means as well as advising on ways in which a legal problem may be solved through the direct and indirect lobbying of decision makers.  Advocacy strategies are also developed and implemented. The work capitalises on the Group’s understanding of, and relationship with, the media and also its strong connections with policy-makers.  Our expertise is significantly enhanced through our dealings with the Government, the major political parties, universities, charities and trade associations.

The Group has both legal and political expertise and regularly responds to consultation documents.  We pride ourselves on being a member of the wider UK community and believe that it is proper to take a closer interest in and make an active contribution to the nations' affairs.  We are constantly monitoring the political landscape and reacting to proposals for policy changes.  Typically, these are initiated by a wide range of organisations such as governmental, local and national regulators.    We also respond to other types of Government documentation such as draft legislative programmes that are prepared in advance of the Queen’s speech and track the progress of any Bills and legislation affecting our clients.
