Media and Public Advocacy

The reputation of a business, organisation or individual is its most valuable asset. Yet no matter how much time, energy and money one invests in generating favourable PR, reputation can be damaged very quickly – particularly through the mass-communication channels, the media and the Internet.  Failing to act rapidly to counter this can lead to potentially fateful results.

Our Media & Public Advocacy Group has experience in a wide range of cases – both high profile and discreet. Our lawyers are on standby 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to advise on issues which arise both pre and post publication or broadcast.  In addition to providing legal strategy, our team quickly familiarises itself with the industry relevant to the case at hand, ensuring the client receives the best possible commercial advice.  Our expertise is significantly enhanced by our experience in dealing with the European Union, Government, the major political parties, universities, charities and trade associations. This enables us to reach key decision makers when defending and repairing damaged reputations.

We regularly deal with cases concerning:

  • Defamation
  • Protection of Privacy
  • Breach of confidence

Work Highlights

Although most of our work is, and will remain, discreet, our team has acted publicly on the following groundbreaking cases:

  • Successfully representing Deborah Lipstadt when she was sued by David Irving (dubbed as “The Case of the Century” by the media) having branded him a holocaust denier.
  • Representing major mining company Oryx Natural Resources in legal action against the BBC and as advocates before the Security Council of the United Nations.  Oryx obtained a record apology and record compensation from the BBC.
  • Representing Israeli universities boycotted by the Association of University Teachers.  The boycott was reversed.
  • Representing community groups such as the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Hindu Forum of Britain in liaison with the Government on new legislation.
