James now heads the Firm’s Mishcon Private department. Prior to that he headed the Firm’s Litigation Department for four years. He acts for corporations, individuals and charities across a wide range of sectors though financial service organisations, family offices, philanthropic and communal bodies feature prominently in his caseload. He advises them on commercial issues such as employment, reputation management and dispute resolution.

James believes in the importance of a broad and long-term advisory role with his clients. The Legal 500 lists him as a legal expert in commercial litigation, employment and defamation and as “strong and decisive”. Attributes demonstrated on behalf of the claimants in the recent and successful Dresdner bonus case and in defending his client, Lonzim plc, against its minority shareholders. Chambers 2010 describes him as "a lateral thinker with innovative ideas."
