Policy
The government’s attempts to reform new legislation that gives equal pay and holiday rights for temporary staff after 12 weeks of working for the same employer have been ended after the CBI and TUC failed to reach an agreement.

The monthly survey of 400 recruitment companies by KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation has shown that recruitment of both permanent and temporary employees continued to grow in September but at a slower rate, with recruitment companies warning that the UK faces a possible “double dip” in employment.

The Reed Job Index has shown that the number of jobs in the UK rose by 2% in September, the second highest rise since the index began in December 2009.

Trends / Practice
There has been a further drop in the number of recruitment companies entering administration in the third quarter of 2010 compared with the previous quarter, with 9 companies going into administration compared to 15 in the second quarter of 2010 and 26 in the same period in 2009.

The Plimsoll report, which analyses the UK's top 1,000 recruiters, has found that 363 fell to below a third of their 2009 value but 384 companies have actually increased in value.
