Policy
In anticipation of the Agency Workers Regulations coming into force on 1 October 2011, companies have been bracing themselves for higher costs and a potential rise in tribunal cases. As a result, law firms are reporting that employers are rewriting contracts to transfer some of the cost to employment agencies. On the other hand, agencies claim that the impact of the change will be less dramatic than employers expect.

Research by executive recruiter Expand shows that 48% of employees regard flexible working as the top benefit, in contrast with only 15% who said they would prefer more money. In an unrelated ComRes poll by BCG and the REC, 79% respondents think that “the government should make it easier for companies to adopt a flexible workforce approach.”

City Law firm Linklaters has released statistics disclosing the social mobility of its employees. The Legal Services Board will require all legal employers to publish data about social mobility, as well as age, race, gender and disabilities by December 2012.
