At the start of the year, Property Week predicted that 2010 would be one of consolidation as agencies merge or are taken over by larger organisations. Deloitte and Drivers Jonas started the ball rolling, and were followed by Capita Symonds’ announcement that it was taking over NB Real Estate. These mergers are a minefield from an employment perspective.
The extent to which employees are affected by a change in ownership depends on the nature of the corporate transaction. There are, essentially, two types: a sale of the shares of the business — which, for these purposes, also includes a merger — and a sale of the assets and goodwill of a business.
