The Eichmann Trial

The capture of Lieutenant Colonel Adolf Eichmann by Israeli agents in Argentina in 1960 and his subsequent trial in Jerusalem electrified the world and sparked a global debate on where, how genocide can be judged. The event has become a touchstone for judicial proceedings throughout the world, offering a legal, moral and political framework for coming to terms with unfathomable evil.

This ‘trial of the century’ is revisited by award-winning historian, Deborah Lipstadt, whose new book, The Eichman Trial, couples historical perspective with contemporary urgency. She will be in conversation Anthony Julius who led her defence team in the David Irving Holocaust denial trial.

Deborah E. Lipstadt is Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University. She was a consultant to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and is the author of History On Trial: My Day in Court With David Irving and Denying The Holocaust.

Anthony Julius is one of England’s most notable lawyers. He is Deputy Chairman of law firm Mishcon de Reya, Chairman of the Jewish Chronicle, Chairman of the London Consortium, and a Visiting Professor at Birkbeck, London University. His most recent book is Trials of the Diaspora: A History of Anti-Semitism in England. He is currently writing a study of censorship and the modern English Novel.
